Which is better? Damascus steel or High carbon steel?

I don't know if they're different or the same but if they're different which is better? The reason I ask is cause I'm looking at a japanese sword right now that says its made of Damascus steel. Its straight edged instead of curved like normal japanese swords so they tempered it differently. I just wanna know if it'll withstand the same torture that a normal high carbon steel japanese sword would take.
