For Christians who claim "faith" is needed for one to know God?

How do you explain Paul hating Jesus and still having his experience on the road to Damascus? It can't simply be that Paul was a devout Jew, because there are lots of those that go their whole life without any experience of Jesus. Doesn't this story undermine the claim that Christian faith is the basis for knowing God?
